Can memory training boost math skills in struggling first graders?

NCT ID NCT07220746

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding working memory training to math tutoring helps first graders at risk for math disabilities more than math tutoring alone. 300 children will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: combined memory and math training, math with reading instruction, or standard school math. Researchers will measure math and memory skills before, during, and after the 15-week program to see if improvements last into second grade.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Coordinated Treatment (working memory training plus math intervention) and Math Treatment (math intervention plus reading instruction)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that combining working memory training with math instruction helps children with math disabilities learn better.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with 300 children, and results may not apply to all students. The interventions are behavioral, so effects may be modest.
