One pill to stop malaria? new combo shows promise
NCT ID NCT05974267
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a single dose of two antimalarial drugs, M5717 and pyronaridine, can clear the malaria parasite from the blood and prevent new infections in people who have the parasite but no symptoms. 192 adults and adolescents in malaria-endemic areas took part. The goal is to find a simple, effective way to prevent malaria with just one treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
M5717 and pyronaridine (antimalarial drugs)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple, single-dose preventive treatment for malaria, reducing the need for multiple doses.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2 trial with only 192 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The combination may not provide long-lasting protection or could have side effects.
