Machine 'Resuscitates' risky donor livers, expanding transplant pool

NCT ID NCT06804746

Summary

This study looked at whether a two-step machine perfusion technique could safely prepare and test higher-risk donor livers for transplantation. Researchers used the machine to revive and assess 206 livers from donors that would typically be considered too risky, then transplanted them into 143 patients with end-stage liver disease. The goal was to see if this approach could improve patient and graft survival while reducing serious complications after surgery.
