Can smart alerts stop post-surgery confusion in memory-impaired patients?

NCT ID NCT05777187

First seen Feb 21, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study tested whether computer alerts in electronic health records could help doctors follow best practices to prevent postoperative delirium (sudden confusion after surgery) in patients with cognitive impairment (memory or thinking problems). Over 7,400 adults with cognitive impairment having surgery were included. The study was stopped early, so results are limited, but the goal was to see if alerts reduce delirium and improve doctor adherence to care guidelines.
