Ultrasound-Guided breathing support may cut ICU distress
NCT ID NCT02123940
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether using a lung ultrasound score to decide on breathing support (high-flow nasal oxygen or noninvasive ventilation) after removing a breathing tube could reduce breathing distress in ICU patients. 483 adults who had been on a ventilator for more than 48 hours took part. The goal was to see if this ultrasound-guided strategy works better than the usual approach.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
lung ultrasound score (device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could reduce breathing distress and the need for re-intubation in ICU patients coming off a ventilator.
What could go wrong
This is a completed Phase 3 trial, but results may not apply to all ICU patients. The ultrasound method requires training and may not be available everywhere.
