Scientists probe lung microbiome to unlock COPD secrets
NCT ID NCT02777879
First seen Jan 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 26 times
Summary
This study looks at the bacteria living in the lungs of smokers with and without early-stage COPD. Researchers will use a bronchoscopy to collect samples and analyze how these bacteria and the body's immune response differ between the two groups. The goal is to better understand what drives COPD in its early stages, which could lead to new ways to detect or treat the disease.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could reveal how lung bacteria contribute to COPD, pointing toward future treatments or prevention strategies.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not lead directly to new therapies, and findings may not apply to all COPD patients.
Conditions
