New lung reconditioning devices could save more donor organs

NCT ID NCT07361718

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tests two medical devices that recondition donor lungs outside the body before transplant. The goal is to see which device helps more marginal donor lungs become healthy enough for transplant. Twenty adults awaiting double lung transplant will take part. If one device works better, it could increase the number of usable donor lungs.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ex vivo lung perfusion device (XPS XVIVO or OCS Transmedics)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help more donor lungs become suitable for transplant, potentially reducing waitlist deaths.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The devices may not improve outcomes enough to change practice.
