Study questions need for routine platelet transfusions before common procedure

NCT ID NCT06187831

First seen May 02, 2026 · Last updated May 12, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at whether it is safe to lower the platelet count that triggers a transfusion before placing a central venous catheter (a special IV line) in patients with blood disorders. Researchers compared a new, lower threshold (10,000 platelets per cubic millimeter) to the old standard (50,000). They focused on serious bleeding events (grade 3 or 4) in 927 patients. The goal is to reduce unnecessary transfusions while keeping patients safe.
