Warm gas during keyhole surgery may cut pain and opioid use
NCT ID NCT05934981
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether using warm, humidified carbon dioxide gas during low-pressure laparoscopic colorectal surgery reduces pain 24 hours after the procedure. 148 adults having surgery for colon or rectal tumors (benign or malignant) took part. One group received warm, moist gas; the other received standard cold, dry gas. The main goal was to see how many patients had mild pain (score 3 or less on a 0–10 scale) without needing strong painkillers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
warm, humidified carbon dioxide gas used during laparoscopic surgery
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to less pain and fewer opioids after colorectal surgery, helping patients recover more comfortably.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with 148 patients. The benefit may be small or not apply to all surgeries. Pain is subjective and results may not be widely generalizable.
