Stem cell therapy for rare eye disease passes 5-year safety check
NCT ID NCT05786287
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study follows up 18 people who received umbilical cord stem cells or conditioned medium for retinitis pigmentosa, a rare eye disease that causes vision loss. Researchers will check vision, eye structure, and safety five years after the injection. The goal is to see if the treatment remains safe over the long term.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells and conditioned medium
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that stem cell therapy is safe for long-term use in retinitis pigmentosa, possibly slowing vision loss.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early safety follow-up with only 18 people, not designed to prove the treatment works. Risks include injection-related complications and uncertain long-term benefits.
