Common mood drug tested as Alzheimer's shield for aging brains

NCT ID NCT03185208

Summary

This study tested whether lithium, a medication long used for mood disorders, could help slow or prevent Alzheimer's dementia in older adults with mild memory problems. 83 participants with mild cognitive impairment were randomly assigned to take either lithium or a placebo pill for two years. Researchers used advanced brain scans and memory tests to see if lithium could preserve brain structure and delay further cognitive decline.
