New blood test could spare bile duct cancer patients unnecessary surgery
NCT ID NCT06381648
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a new blood test called LyMIC that looks for tiny particles (exosomes) released by cancer cells. The goal was to see if it could accurately tell whether bile duct cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes before surgery. Researchers analyzed blood samples from 230 patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. If successful, this test could help doctors choose the right treatment—like whether to remove lymph nodes—without needing invasive procedures.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
LyMIC (a panel of exosomal miRNAs measured in blood)
What this could lead to
If this blood test proves accurate, it could help doctors decide on the best treatment approach for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma without needing invasive surgery to check lymph nodes.
What could go wrong
This is a completed study, but the test's accuracy is still being evaluated. It may not be reliable enough for routine use, and further validation in larger, diverse groups is needed.
