Blood test breakthrough? opening the Brain's barrier during surgery may reveal hidden clues
NCT ID NCT07224451
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study explores whether temporarily opening the blood-brain barrier using a special electrical field during spine surgery can release brain-specific markers into the blood. Researchers will compare these blood markers to those found in spinal fluid from the same patient. If it works, it could pave the way for a simple blood test to diagnose brain and spinal cord diseases without a spinal tap.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Barrier disrupting fields (BDF) procedure
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a less invasive way to detect brain and spinal cord conditions using a simple blood test instead of a spinal tap.
What could go wrong
This is a very early feasibility study with only 20 participants. The procedure is done under anesthesia during surgery, so results may not apply to awake patients or other settings.
