New nerve block aims to stop chronic pain after mastectomy

NCT ID NCT07289178

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a single injection of liposome bupivacaine, a long-acting anesthetic, into the chest wall can reduce pain sensitivity and prevent chronic pain after radical mastectomy. 120 breast cancer patients will receive the nerve block during surgery, and their pain thresholds and pain scores will be tracked for 6 months. The goal is to see if this approach can improve recovery and lower the risk of lasting pain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

liposome bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a way to reduce long-term pain after mastectomy, improving recovery and quality of life for breast cancer patients.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase study with only 120 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The nerve block may not significantly reduce chronic pain, and there are risks like allergic reaction or infection.
