Could a constipation drug replace that nasty colonoscopy prep?
NCT ID NCT06692673
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study is testing whether the drug linaclotide, usually used for constipation, can prepare the bowel for colonoscopy as well as the standard 4-liter PEG drink. Ten adults scheduled for colonoscopy will take two doses of linaclotide along with Gatorade and a clear liquid diet. The goal is to see if this simpler regimen provides adequate bowel cleaning.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- linaclotide
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simpler, lower-volume bowel preparation option for colonoscopy, potentially improving patient comfort and compliance.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small pilot study with only 10 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The regimen may not clean the bowel as well as the standard prep, and side effects like diarrhea or dehydration are possible.
