First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a lidocaine patch placed on the gums can reduce pain after removing an impacted wisdom tooth. Twenty-one adults will have one tooth removed and receive either the lidocaine patch or a placebo patch. Pain, swelling, and mouth opening will be checked on days 1, 3, and 7 after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
lidocaine patch
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, targeted way to manage pain after wisdom tooth removal without needing as many pain pills.
What could go wrong
This is a very small early-stage trial with only 21 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The patch might not reduce pain much more than a placebo.
