Common numbing drug tested to calm the gut during scopes

NCT ID NCT07333859

Summary

This study is testing if giving an intravenous infusion of lidocaine (a common numbing medication) during an ERCP procedure can help calm unwanted gut muscle spasms. Researchers want to see if this reduces the need for extra 'rescue' spasm drugs, lowers the amount of sedation medicine required, and helps keep patients' vital signs stable. The trial involves 120 patients who will randomly receive either lidocaine or a placebo saline solution during their scheduled ERCP.
