First seen Jan 12, 2026 · Last updated Apr 28, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study tested whether giving lidocaine through a vein can reduce gut spasms and the need for extra calming medications during ERCP, a procedure to treat bile duct issues. 120 adults having planned ERCP received either lidocaine or a placebo. The researchers measured how often rescue drugs were needed for severe spasms and how much sedation was used. The goal was to see if lidocaine makes the procedure smoother and safer.
