Super whey protein could fight Age-Related muscle loss
NCT ID NCT06971822
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether a whey protein with extra leucine (a key amino acid) helps older adults build muscle better than regular whey protein. Thirty healthy men over 65 will take the protein and have muscle biopsies to measure protein synthesis at rest and after exercise. The goal is to find a simple way to combat sarcopenia, the muscle loss that comes with aging.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
leucine-enriched whey protein (beta-lactoglobulin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a simple dietary supplement to help older adults maintain muscle mass and reduce frailty.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 30 healthy men, so results may not apply to everyone. It measures short-term muscle protein synthesis, not long-term strength or function.
