Lateral kangaroo care may be as safe as prone for tiny preemies
NCT ID NCT03990116
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether holding very premature babies (under 28 weeks) skin-to-skin on their side (lateral) works as well as the usual tummy-down (prone) position for keeping them warm and stable. Researchers measured body temperature changes in 70 infants during their first five days of life. The goal is to offer more options for kangaroo care without compromising safety.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that lateral kangaroo care is as good as the traditional prone position, giving parents and nurses more flexibility in caring for very premature babies.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 70 infants, so results may not apply to all premature babies. It focuses on temperature stability, not long-term health outcomes.
