Knee surgery study questions need for extra ligament release

NCT ID NCT01719666

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looked at 140 people with recurrent kneecap dislocation who needed surgery. Half received the standard MPFL reconstruction, and the other half had an additional lateral retinaculum release. The goal was to see if the extra release improves kneecap alignment or outcomes. The researchers hypothesized it might not make a difference.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that the simpler surgery (without the extra release) is just as effective, reducing unnecessary procedures.

What could go wrong

This is a completed trial with 140 patients, but it is testing a surgical technique, not a new drug. The results may not apply to all patients or surgeons.
