First-of-its-kind voice box transplants aim to give patients their speech and swallow back

NCT ID NCT02821299

Summary

This study is testing larynx (voice box) transplants in three patients who have permanently lost their ability to speak, breathe normally, and swallow due to severe injury. The goal is to see if transplanting a donor larynx can restore these vital functions for people who have no other treatment options. Each patient will be closely monitored to see if the transplant improves their swallowing, voice, and breathing, and if the body accepts the new tissue.
