World-First larynx transplant trial aims to give voice back to three patients

NCT ID NCT02821299

First seen Feb 21, 2026 · Last updated Apr 24, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study tests laryngeal (voice box) transplantation in 3 adults who have permanently lost the ability to speak, breathe, and swallow normally due to severe injury. The goal is to restore these functions using a donor larynx, with a new nerve reconnection technique to improve outcomes. Participants will need to take lifelong immunosuppressive drugs to prevent rejection, so this is a disease-control approach, not a cure.
