Sugar solution could get bowels moving faster after surgery
NCT ID NCT07589465
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving lactulose, a mild laxative, after complex appendix surgery helps the bowels start working again sooner. 150 adults will receive either lactulose or a placebo for a few days after their operation. The main goal is to see how quickly they can pass stool and eat solid food without problems.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
lactulose
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to help people recover bowel function faster after complicated appendix surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial at a single center. The benefit may be modest, and lactulose can cause bloating or cramping.
