Could a probiotic in the bladder ease catheter troubles?
NCT ID NCT04323735
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether a probiotic (Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG) placed directly into the bladder can reduce urinary symptoms in people with neurogenic bladder who use an indwelling catheter. Researchers will also look at changes in urine inflammation, bacteria, and the overall urine ecosystem. The goal is to find the best dose for a future larger trial.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG (a probiotic)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, non-antibiotic way to reduce urinary symptoms and infections in people with neurogenic bladder who use catheters.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2 trial with only 182 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The probiotic may not improve symptoms or could cause irritation.
