Side-Lying during labor may speed up delivery, new study hopes to prove

NCT ID NCT07411352

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether lying on the left side during active labor shortens the time to delivery compared to lying on the back. Researchers will randomly assign 188 first-time mothers to one of two positions, alternating 30-minute intervals with rest. The goal is to see if a simple position change can reduce labor duration and the need for medical help like oxytocin or C-sections.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

body positioning (left lateral decubitus vs supine)

What this could lead to

If it works, this simple position change could shorten labor and reduce the need for medical interventions like oxytocin or C-sections.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with no blinding of participants, so results may not be conclusive or widely applicable. The benefit may be small or absent.
