Knee surgery showdown: which fix keeps Kids' kneecaps in place?
NCT ID NCT07564011
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will compare two surgical techniques for children who have repeated kneecap dislocations. One surgery repairs only the main ligament (MPFL), while the other also repairs a secondary ligament (MPTL). The goal is to see which approach better prevents future dislocations and improves knee function. Twenty-two children under 18 will be followed for at least two years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- surgical procedure (MPFL reconstruction alone or combined with MPTL reconstruction)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this study could show that adding a second ligament reconstruction reduces the chance of the kneecap dislocating again and improves knee function in children.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small, early study with only 22 children, and it hasn't started yet. Surgery always carries risks like infection or stiffness, and the best approach is still debated.
