Kidney transplant breakthrough: could this be the end of lifelong pills?

NCT ID NCT03504241

First seen Feb 14, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This early-stage study tested a new approach to help kidney transplant recipients stop taking anti-rejection drugs. Eight adults received donor stem cells along with a special drug combination, aiming to train their immune system to accept the new kidney without long-term medication. The goal was to see if it's safe and if patients could gradually reduce and stop all anti-rejection drugs without rejecting the kidney.
