Surgery drug tested to shield elderly minds from Post-Op confusion

NCT ID NCT05242692

Summary

This study tested if a low dose of the anesthetic drug S-ketamine, given during surgery, could help prevent post-operative delirium—a sudden state of severe confusion—in patients aged 60 and older undergoing chest surgery. Researchers compared it to another standard drug (dexmedetomidine) and a placebo to see if it was at least as good at reducing the risk. The goal was to find a safe way to protect brain function after major surgery.
