New approach aims to cut painkillers after major heart surgery

NCT ID NCT04600089

Summary

This study is testing whether a low dose of the drug ketamine can help reduce pain and the need for strong opioid painkillers after major aortic surgery. It will involve 30 patients who are having a specific type of aortic repair and receiving a protective spinal cord infusion that can increase pain. Researchers will compare ketamine to a placebo to see if it lowers pain scores and opioid use in the first two days after surgery.
