Could a tooth cleanser coating make braces screws more stable?
NCT ID NCT05639907
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether coating orthodontic miniscrews with an antimicrobial liquid called K21 can reduce gum inflammation and keep the screws stable. Thirty people needing at least two miniscrews will have one screw coated with K21 and the other with a placebo (ethanol). The researchers will check for redness, swelling, and screw movement over 8 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
K21 cavity cleanser (antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compound)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could reduce gum inflammation and improve the success rate of orthodontic miniscrews, making braces treatment more comfortable and reliable.
What could go wrong
This is a small early-stage trial with only 30 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The K21 coating might not reduce inflammation or improve stability more than the control.
