New PET scan criteria could spare Low-Risk prostate cancer patients from overtreatment
NCT ID NCT07168616
First seen Sep 30, 2025 · Last updated May 08, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study is testing a new way to read PSMA PET/CT scans, called the Istanbul Criteria, to better identify which men with low-risk prostate cancer can safely choose active surveillance (monitoring) instead of immediate treatment. About 200 men with low-risk prostate cancer will receive a special PET scan, and researchers will check how well the criteria predict the presence of more aggressive cancer. The goal is to reduce unnecessary biopsies, MRIs, and treatments while ensuring that men with hidden aggressive cancer get the care they need.
