Muscle transplant combo aims to free diabetes patients from insulin

NCT ID NCT03977662

First seen Apr 09, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This early-phase study tested whether transplanting insulin-making cells (pancreatic islets) together with a parathyroid gland into the muscle could help people with type 1 diabetes stop using insulin. Only 4 participants who already had a kidney or liver transplant took part. The main goals were safety and seeing if insulin independence was possible, but the study was too small to draw firm conclusions.
