New breathing device could slash hospital stays for disabled kids

NCT ID NCT07473856

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether using a special breathing device called intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV) at home can prevent hospital stays for children with multiple disabilities. About 146 children aged 1 to 16 will be randomly assigned to either standard chest therapy alone or standard therapy plus IPV used by caregivers five times a week. The goal is to see if the device reduces the number of times children need to be readmitted for breathing problems.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV) device

What this could lead to

If it works, this could give families a practical way to manage breathing problems at home and cut down on hospital visits.

What could go wrong

The trial hasn't started yet, and it's relatively small (146 children). The device requires caregiver training and commitment, so real-world use may vary.
