Bone antibiotics: a new way to stop prosthetic infections?

NCT ID NCT07621094

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether giving antibiotics directly into the bone during surgery can prevent infections in people with osseointegration implants (a type of prosthetic that attaches directly to the bone). About 100 adults who already have or are getting these implants will receive vancomycin through a small tube in the bone during their operation. Researchers will track wound healing, infections, and any side effects for one year to see if this approach is safe and effective.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

vancomycin (antibiotic)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a better way to prevent and treat infections in people with bone-anchored prosthetics, reducing the need for implant removal.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with no comparison group, so it is unclear if the antibiotic delivery method is truly effective. There are also risks of antibiotic side effects like allergic reactions or kidney problems.
