New study aims to bridge communication gap for patients with speech and hearing disabilities

NCT ID NCT04697212

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested two approaches to help healthcare providers communicate better with patients who have speech, language, voice, or hearing disabilities. One approach trained healthcare teams on communication strategies, and the other added a patient prompt list that lets patients share their preferred communication methods. The goal was to see if these tools improve patient experience and quality of life. Over 680 patients and their healthcare teams took part across multiple primary care clinics.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

behavioral intervention (communication training for healthcare teams and a patient prompt list)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward simple, low-cost ways to improve healthcare experiences for millions of people with communication disabilities.

What could go wrong

This is a completed behavioral study, not a drug trial. The results may not apply to all healthcare settings or patient groups, and improvements in communication may not always lead to better health outcomes.
