Hospital docs get report cards on antibiotic use to cut risky prescriptions

NCT ID NCT07368660

First seen Jan 29, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study tested a simple idea: give hospital doctors regular reports comparing their antibiotic prescribing rates to their peers. The goal was to see if this feedback would encourage them to prescribe fewer unnecessary antibiotics, which can cause side effects like diarrhea or drug-resistant infections. All 147 hospital medicine providers at four Emory hospitals took part, and researchers tracked changes in prescribing patterns and patient outcomes over time.
