New breathing monitor could spot trouble before doctors do

NCT ID NCT03043911

First seen Mar 16, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study looked at whether adding continuous breathing rate monitoring to standard oxygen and pulse checks can catch breathing problems earlier in adults recovering from surgery who are taking opioid pain medicine. Researchers observed 87 patients using a special neck sensor and finger clip, but kept the breathing data hidden from doctors to see if it would have warned about issues sooner. The goal was to learn if this extra monitoring could improve patient safety.
