Scientists probe why bone cancer patients face 30% implant infection risk

NCT ID NCT07264296

Summary

This study aims to understand why patients with bone cancer (skeletal sarcoma) who receive large joint replacement implants get infections up to 30% of the time, compared to only 1-2% for arthritis patients. Researchers will collect tissue and blood samples from 40 patients during surgery to compare their immune responses and the bacteria involved. The goal is to learn whether the patient's immune system or the bacteria themselves are the main cause of these serious infections.
