When is the best time for a birth control implant after delivery? new study aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07626502

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study will look at 90 women who choose the etonogestrel implant (Implanon-NXT) for birth control after giving birth. Half will get the implant within 72 hours of delivery, and the other half will get it 4-6 weeks later. Researchers will track side effects, bleeding patterns, satisfaction, and how many women continue using the implant over a year.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

etonogestrel subdermal implant (Implanon-NXT)

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help determine the best time to insert the contraceptive implant after childbirth to improve satisfaction and reduce side effects.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study with only 90 participants, so results may not apply to all women. It does not test a new treatment, only timing of an existing device.
