Can electrical muscle stimulation boost recovery in ICU patients?
NCT ID NCT07179718
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares two rehabilitation approaches for patients in intensive care: bicycle exercise alone versus bicycle exercise plus electrical muscle stimulation. Twenty-four adults will participate for five days. Researchers will measure changes in mobility, muscle strength, and other health indicators to see which approach works better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and bicycle ergometer exercise
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a better rehabilitation protocol for intensive care patients, helping them regain mobility and strength more quickly.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage study with only 24 participants, so results may not apply to all ICU patients. The intervention is short (5 days) and may not show lasting benefits.
