New freezing technique shows promise for stubborn heart flutter
NCT ID NCT04061603
First seen Apr 18, 2026 · Last updated Apr 23, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a new device that uses extreme cold to destroy small areas of heart tissue causing persistent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat). 215 adults with this condition were treated. The goal was to see if the procedure is safe and effectively restores normal heart rhythm without needing long-term medication. This is a disease control approach, not a cure, as the underlying condition may still require management.
