Hypnosis before surgery: a new way to calm nerves?

NCT ID NCT07370974

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether a 15-20 minute hypnosis session, given right before abdominal surgery, can help patients feel less anxious and experience less pain afterward. About 48 adults having abdominal surgery in Morocco will be randomly assigned to receive either hypnosis or standard psychological preparation. The main goal is to see if hypnosis lowers anxiety scores just before the operation.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to help patients feel calmer before surgery and possibly have less pain afterward.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 48 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The effect of hypnosis can vary greatly between individuals.
