Can a simple saltwater rinse tame COVID-19 symptoms?
NCT ID NCT04382131
First seen Mar 06, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 17 times
Summary
This study tested whether rinsing the nose and gargling with salt water (hypertonic saline) helps people with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 feel better faster. Adults in the UK who were isolating at home within 48 hours of symptoms were randomly assigned to add saltwater rinses to standard care or just standard care alone. The trial was stopped early with only 16 participants, so no firm conclusions can be drawn.
