Simple x-ray may spot hidden bone loss in stroke survivors

NCT ID NCT07651306

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether a standard shoulder X-ray can detect bone loss in the weak arm of people who have had a stroke. Researchers will measure bone thickness on X-rays from 65 stroke survivors and compare those measurements to the gold-standard DXA bone density scan. If the X-ray method works well, it could offer a cheaper, more accessible way to screen for osteoporosis after stroke.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that simple shoulder X-rays can help screen for bone loss after stroke, making detection easier and more accessible.

What could go wrong

This is a small, observational study, not a treatment trial. It only looks at past data, so it cannot prove that X-rays can replace DXA scans for diagnosis.
