Monthly shot tested to help hospital patients stay in opioid treatment

NCT ID NCT04345718

Summary

This study tested whether a single monthly injection of buprenorphine (XR-BUP) worked better than standard daily medications at helping hospitalized patients with opioid addiction stay in treatment after going home. About 344 adults with moderate to severe opioid addiction were randomly assigned to get either the monthly shot or one of the usual daily treatments right before hospital discharge. Researchers then checked if patients were still receiving legitimate addiction medication 34, 90, and 180 days later.
