Breast milk sugar tested for antarctic health boost
NCT ID NCT06133530
First seen Apr 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 05, 2026 · Updated 10 times
Summary
This study tests whether a prebiotic supplement called human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), found naturally in breast milk, can help adults living in Antarctica maintain a healthy gut, immune system, and metabolism. Twenty-six healthy adults wintering at the Concordia station will either receive HMOs or a placebo for several months. Researchers will track changes in blood sugar, inflammation, and gut bacteria to see if HMOs can counter the negative effects of extreme isolation and low oxygen.
