Summary
This study tested whether an experimental HIV vaccine could prevent infection in over 5,400 sexually active adults in South Africa. Participants received either the vaccine or a placebo and were followed for up to 36 months. The vaccine was found to be safe but did not provide enough protection against HIV to continue.
