New HIV vaccine booster trial launches: could it strengthen immunity?
NCT ID NCT06665646
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage trial is testing a new HIV vaccine booster called VRIPRO, given with an immune-boosting adjuvant, in 40 healthy adults aged 18-60 who previously received an HIV vaccine in the HVTN 706 study. Participants will get three shots over 24 weeks. The main goals are to check safety and see if the booster increases HIV-fighting antibodies. This is a small, early study focused on safety and immune response, not on preventing HIV infection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
CD40.HIVRI.Env (VRIPRO) vaccine with Hiltonol Poly-ICLC adjuvant
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a more effective HIV vaccine strategy by boosting immune memory in people already vaccinated.
What could go wrong
This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 40 participants, so it is primarily checking safety, not effectiveness. The immune response may be weak or not last, and side effects like injection site pain or flu-like symptoms are possible.
