HIV shots for kids? study tests monthly or Every-Other-Month injections
NCT ID NCT03497676
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested the safety and dosing of long-acting injectable HIV medications (cabotegravir and rilpivirine) in 168 children and adolescents whose HIV was already well-controlled with daily pills. Participants first took oral versions to check tolerance, then switched to shots given every 4 or 8 weeks. The goal was to see if these shots are a safe and acceptable alternative to daily oral therapy for younger people living with HIV.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cabotegravir and rilpivirine (injectable and oral forms)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a convenient long-acting injectable option for children and teens living with HIV, reducing the need for daily pills.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase study (Phase 1/2) with a small number of participants. The results may not apply to all children, and side effects or injection pain could be issues.
